The Community Engagement Committee Organises Speaking Workshop for Sa’d Ibn Abi Waqqas School at UTAS Shinas
The UTAS-Shinas English Language Center and Community Engagement Committee recently conducted a two-day speaking workshop for students from Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas Secondary School, located in Shinas. The aim of the workshop was to improve the students' speaking abilities.
The event which took place on 26th and 27th April 2023 was conducted by two experienced teachers from the English Language Center, Mr. Johnny Kwashie Lanyon and Mr. Given Chakalisa, at the Multipurpose Hall in the Engineering Building. To enhance the students' speaking skills, the teachers used various activities and strategies. Additionally, the students from the English Club prepared vocabulary games and took the students of Sa’d Ibn Abi Waqqas School on a tour of the university campus.
The event was supervised by the Community Engagement Committee coordinator, Mr. Salim Al Badi, and the Head of Section, Ms. Amal Al Jahwari, who provided support and guidance to the students. The students were enthusiastic and eager to learn, and the presenters offered valuable advice on how to overcome stage fear and communicate ideas clearly and effectively.
Through this initiative, the Community Engagement Committee aimed to support and assist local communities. The workshop was a huge success and helped to strengthen the relationship between UTAS-Shinas and the community.
Overall, the two-day workshop was a beneficial experience for the students, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to become effective communicators and presenters. The English Language Center and Community Engagement Committee of UTAS-Shinas are committed to hosting more such events in the future to continue supporting the local community.
