Mechanical Students’ Industrial Visit
The External Link Committee organized an industrial visit for Diploma & Advanced Diploma Students to ‘Sohar Foundry’ on May 12th 2014.
Mr. Atchaiah Sastry K. accompanied 14 students on this industrial visit. The group left at 8.15 AM from Shinas College of Technology and reached the ‘Sohar Foundry’ after a 40 minute ride. At the beginning of tour, those students who were going on such a visit for the first time felt a bit overwhelmed by the new environment and industrial systems. On reaching the Sohar Foundry, the group underwent security clearance formalities which were simple and cordial. Ms. Maryam Al Balushi, HR Manager received the group and arranged one of their qualified technical staff to guide the students.
After the warm welcome, the group was taken to attend a Safety Induction Program which familiarized them on how important it was to follow safety rules and to be careful while moving in the factory area. Then they were taken on a tour of the laboratory facilities and the requirements of laboratories for production were detailed. The students were then escorted to the actual production area. At the time of our visit the furnace was under maintenance. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it helped our students to observe all the parts of furnace at close quarters and understand the processes clearly. Then they were taken to see the finishing and fabrication activities. They also observed how the inspection team checked the quality of the products.
At the end of the visit, we were taken to the Administrative office where the HR Manager bid us a fond farewell. Before leaving, the staff and students of Shinas College of Technology thanked the Sohar Foundry officials for the courtesy extended to us. The visit was a great success as it helped the students to understand the actual work environment in a medium scale industry.
