Industry Visit by Mechanical Engineering Students
The Engineering Department in coordination with the On Job Training Department of the College arranged Industrial Visits for Diploma and Advanced Diploma students doing course project this semester.
For Diploma Mechanical Engineering Students, visits were arranged to Oman Aluminium Processing Industries Limited (OAPIL) on 10th March 2014 and to Sohar Foundry and Marine Engineering (SFME) on 13th March 2014. For Advanced Diploma Students a visit to ORPIC was arranged on 18th March 2014.
At OAPIL, the students learnt about safety procedures, stages of production of Aluminium Coils and Conductors from molten Aluminium, Material Handling, and Process Control.
The SFME visit began with, a talk about safety policy and procedures. The students were then taken to the material testing laboratory where they were given a demonstration of equipments such as Universal Testing Machine, Atomic Spectrometer, Microscope etc. used for material testing. Next, the students were taken to the foundry where they observed mould making, casting and heat treatment. In the fabrication shop, the students observed processes like TIG welding, CNC gas cutting, gang drilling, milling operation and section rolling.
On arrival at ORPIC, students were shown a video detailing the profile of ORPIC and the process involved. Then the visitors were taken around the lounge to view the charts and specimens about products of ORPIC. The accompanying official/s gave detailed explanations for the benefit of the students. The students then visited the Mechanical Maintenance Department which handles various maintenance activities of engineering components like valves, pumps, pipes etc. Here the students observed how the maintenance section handles the jobs.
All the three visits helped the students to understand various processes, and relate theoretical concepts with real life work situations. The students closely observed the actual working environment in the manufacturing industries. The visits were a great success and were appreciated by the students.
The Mechanical Engineering Section takes this opportunity to thank the management of these industries for their time and support.
