Industry Visit by Civil Engineering Students

The Engineering Department in coordination with the On Job Training Department of the College arranged Industrial Visits for Diploma, Advanced Diploma and B. Tech students of Civil Engineering. B. Tech students visited the Muscat International Airport (under construction) on 16th March. On 18th March, Diploma students visited various ongoing projects under the Shinas Municipality and the Advanced Diploma students visited Horizon Industries on 19th March. In the first part of the visit to the Muscat International Airport, the Design and Resident Engineer of the BEB Consortium gave health and safety instructions to the students and provided safety jackets and safety glasses. The students were then taken to the construction site of the passenger terminal building where the architect explained to the students the details of the construction work cross referencing it with the drawings. The students were also shown heavy machineries used on the site. The crane used on the site is considered to be the largest of its kind in the world. In the second part of the visit, the students were shown the right and left piers of the airport. The uses of these piers and other upcoming tasks were explained to the students. During the visit to the Shinas Municipality, the Head of Technical Affairs explained the procedures followed at the Municipality. The visitors were then taken to a building project near the Municipality. As the project is in the starting stage, the students were provided with explanations regarding the laying of foundation of the building in relation to the drawings and the various stages of construction. The second project the students visited was Shinas Gate. Students were given detailed explanations about reinforcement of column, form work and other ongoing tasks. The students were also taken to the express highway project by the CC Construction Company. After briefing about the project with the help of drawings the engineer had an open discussion session with the students. Advanced diploma students who visited Horizon Industries received information about the industry and the production and construction of building with modular structures. In the manufacturing area of the company, the students observed how rapid walls are casted and transported. All the three visits were arranged with the objective of showing different stages of construction in a variety of projects to the students. The visit to the airport construction site was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the students. The opportunity to observe the use of modern technology in the making of rapid structures which save construction time considerably was an illumining experience for the students. Civil Engineering Section takes this opportunity to thank the management of these industries for their time and support.
