Electrical engineering students visit SAPP
The Engineering and OJT Departments arranged a field visit to the Sohar Aluminium Power Plant (SAPP) on Oct 8, 2015. Mr .Mahesh Aphale, a faculty member in the Electrical Engineering section accompanied 16 diploma students to the plant.
This is the first visit made by the students since the SAPP has installed a high capacity power range.
Company personnel, Mr. James Mc Dough, Mr. Faisal Al Zaabi and Mr. Hamed Al Sinani welcomed the visitors to the plant. Mr. Hamed gave a presentation on the power plant. He emphasized the importance of the health and safety standards maintained on the premises.
Mr. Faisal Al Zaabi, elaborated on the features of the state of the art power plant. The plant is a Combined Cycle power plant which has a capacity of 1000MW. It supplies electricity at 220 kV to the aluminum smelter in Sohar Aluminium which is located about 15 km away. It also supplies electricity to the National Grid as and when necessary. There are two sets of turbines each one having two gas turbines and a steam turbine.
Mr. Faisal, along with other employees- Mr. Ali Al Issai, Mr. Yousuf and Mr. Selva, took the students around the plant in groups and explained the different stages of energy conversion.
The students of the Electrical Engineering section were able to observe the actual process and also see various machines such as, generators, transformers and other equipment.
