Advanced Diploma Civil Engineering students visit Sohar Port free zone
An industrial visit to Sohar port free zone for Advanced Diploma level Civil Engineering students was organized by the Industrial Link committee, in coordination with the OJT Department on 10thJune 2015. The students, along with the HOS Civil Engineering, Dr. Mahmoud Khazalah and Civil Section Faculty, Mr.Santosh visited the Sohar Port free zone.
Sohar Port authorities warmly received the students, Mr. Ashraf; the Communication Manager personally took students to the auditorium where they explained safety concerns. The Manager for assets management, Mr. Khalid Al Alawi, presented and elaborated on the assets of Sohar port, as well as future expansion plans. The students were also informed of the scope of the organization for civil engineers.
There after the students were taken to the various locations to view the civil engineering structures and construction. The construction and maintenance of storm water channel, the sea water intake channels for desalination, the road works, the ongoing piling for the foundationsetc., were explained.
The students were taken to see the off-shore structures where the quay wall, breakwater, jetty, sheet piling, etc. were explained. On return, students took in a view of the existing company structures on the premises such as Orpic, Sohar steels, Jindal-Shadeed and Veley.
Mr. Khalid Al Alawi and Maryam Al Kalbani accompanied and guided the visit. All students had good interaction with these authorities during the explanations of the differing structures.
The SHCT students, who are completing the advanced diploma, made aware of the field work, which was an objective of the visit. This endeavor will increase student confidence in the profession which they will undertake in the future.
The visit was very fruitful. It ended with a lovely treat in the form of a lunch, sponsored by the Sohar port free zone authority.
The visit was successfully completed at around 2:30PM.
