ShCT Partcipates in the FOSS Conference in Muscat

ShCT participated in the Free Open Source Software Conference (FOSSC) held at Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat on February 18 & 19, 2013. The two-day conference was attended by nine ETC Staff, three IT Staff and twelve IT Students. The conference was jointly organized by the Communication and Information Research Center (CIRC) Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and the Information Technology Authority (ITA). On the first day, the exhibition hub was opened for the participants to check and experience on hand the power of the Open Source. In the conference hall, papers on Open Source in Education and Adopting Open Source were presented by experts representing reputable Free Open Source Industries from all over the world. The speakers included Jim Lacey, the President & CEO Linux Professional Institute, Nor Aliah Mohd Zahri, Deputy Director General of Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), Cat Allman, Program Manager in Open Source Programs for Google, Jaco du Toit, Adviser for Communication and Information, UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, Albert-Claude Benhamou, Inter-ministerial Delegate for Digital Education in Africa & a medicine professor at University de Paris Title: Sankore program, Sara Fernandes, United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology, Italo Vignoli, Director, The Document Foundation, Abdulrahman Al-Alarifi, Director of the Saudi National Program for Free and Open Source Technologies (Motah), George DeBono, General Manager, Middle East, Turkey & Africa at Red Hat and Michael Meskes, President of the Creative Group. On the second day, the conference continued with topics on the use and development of Open Source in the government. Two speakers, Erkan Tekman, Founder & CEO, Linuxera, and Dileesh Suseelan, Consultant, ITA Governance and Advisory Division, discussed about The Success Factors for a National Open Source Initiative and ITA role in encouraging FOSS deployment through consultation services respectively. The second session was on cloud technology and open source. The discussions were led by Sam Al Schamma, Director Software and Services Intel Middle East, Turkey & Africa, Kit Lloyd, Country General Manager, Gulf Business Machines (GBM) Oman, George Dunlap, Staff Software Engineer, Citrix Systems UK Ltd and Sebastien Goasguen, Open Source Cloud Computing Evangelist, Apache CloudStack Committee. In the last session, papers were presented by different authors from around the globe. The conference provided a great opportunity for the college to adopt new learning and technology innovations. In addition, it helped our college to gain contacts with experts from other technological institutions around the Sultanate.
