The Civil Engineering department of Shinas College of Technology organized a one-day industrial visit for B.Tech students to Consolidated Contractors Company, Oman on 14th October 2014. Dr.MahmoudKhazalah, H.O.S. of the Civil Engineering section and Mr.A.Kandasamy, a lecturer in the Civil Engineering section accompanied the students on this industrial visit. Eighteen students of B.Tech Civil Engineering section participated in the visit.

The purpose of the trip was to enable students to gain practical knowledge related to their subjects. (Highway &Transportation Engg., Structural Engineering , etc.).

The industrial project is located in the Batinah Region on the existing Batinah Highway in the Wilayat of Sohar, Sultanate of Oman. It consists of the construction of an interchange, in place of the existing round-about, along with all work associated with it. The total length of the project along, Batinah highway is about 4 km, which is to be converted from four-lanes to six-lanes. Students visited the CCC office in Falaj. The construction manager, F.Q.I., Mr. Walid Suleiman, briefed students about the project.

First, surveying has to be done before laying roads. Then the levels of the natural surface and detours of the finished road are found. After this, cutting and filling has to be done accordingly, based on differing surface levels. Hethen explained the longitudinal and cross-sectional drawings of the highway. The layers of the pavement are as follows:

a. Sub-Base (200mm)

b. Aggregate Base course (300 mm)

c. Bituminous base course (120 mm)

d. Bituminous wearing course (60mm).

The utilities and services, such as telephone, water pipes, etc., are placed under the pavement. In the median strip between the two highways, equipment such as lights, radar and traffic signals are placed. He further explained that the major scope of the work done by them. In this project they will use 25 piers and each pier stands on a pile foundation, which was then explained to us. They gave students a demonstration on how they install the precast interlocking elements for retaining walls with the help of a crane. They also described the construction of a deck slab as well as the reinforcement details of the deck slab.

It was a very interesting daytrip and the students highly benefited from the visit and gained invaluable knowledge and insight.
