UTAS Shinas Students Mark World Mental Health Day

Students from the English Club and the Guiding & Counselling Group, of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences-Shinas, marked World Mental Health Day, to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to address ways on how to support the mental health of university students.   According to a recent study by Mayo Clinic Health System, in June 2022, it was found that 1 in 3 students experienced significant depression and anxiety with up to 44% of college students having reported symptoms of depression and anxiety. Students presented talks and videos in English to highlight the growing concerns about students’ mental health issues and what needs to be done to make mental health care, a reality for people worldwide. Youtube content creator, student Abdelaziz Al Kaabi, discussed the importance of normalizing mental health issues to embrace a culture of acceptance in order to create a ‘Community of Care’ he addressed the need to make self-care a priority.  He also talked about recognizing when and how to support individuals, who may be experiencing mental health issues but suffering in silence.  Utba Al Waiili, Hafsa Al Maskari and AbdulHakim Al Badi presented a show about the factors which lead to stress and anxiety, such as the pressure to achieve academically, financial worries, getting a good job, and the fear of failing, which may lead to students dropping out of studies.  The program was attended by foundation students of UTAS Shinas.  Head of Section for the English Language Centre, Mr Hamdan Al Abri commented that various forms of anxiety, including language anxiety, are becoming worryingly prevalent, but existing counselling and mental health services are available on campus to support our students throughout their academic journey. Student Ghaitha Al Shaksi from the Guiding and Counselling Group informed students about where and how to access the support services available at UTAS Shinas.
