UTAS Shinas Student meets Ambassadors and Minister of Social Development for Omani Women's Day
To celebrate Omani Women's Day, with a taste of 'life in the world of foreign affairs', student Rudaina Al Shehhi from UTAS Shinas was one of the lucky finalists to be selected by the British Embassy in Muscat to be an 'Ambassador for a Day' The initiative, which was themed around women in leadership, to mark Omani Women's Day, was launched by the British Embassy in Muscat. Ten young Omani women aged between 18-25 were shortlisted to be an 'Ambassador for a Day' after applications were received from entries across Oman. The event aimed to support women empowerment and provide the young Omani women the opportunity to develop leadership skills, diplomacy and negotiation skills, which are essentially required when considering a career in diplomacy and foreign affairs. The Minister of Social Development, Her Excellency Laila Al Najjar was among the key dignitaries at the event, including female ambassadors from the USA, Italy, Kenya and Turkey. Other events in the day included a Young Ambassadors Workshop, followed by a ‘Women Leaders Networking Lunch’ hosted by the British Ambassador to Oman, His Excellency Bill Murray at his residence. Her Excellency Lyutha Al Mughairi, the first ever Omani female to be appointed as an ambassador from Oman, joined the event virtually from London. She talked to the young ambassadors about the positive impact of women in leadership and the contribution towards government and policymaking. Kenyan ambassador, Her Exceleency Amina Abdalla presented special floral bouquets shipped from Kenya, to the ten aspiring young ambassadors. Student Rudaina Al Shehhi described the experience as ‘a valuable and unique opportunity to mingle with ambassadors, to learn about their daily lives and their amazing experiences of representing their countries as dignitaries in the Sultanate of Oman. The event ended with certificates presented to the young ambassadors by His Excellency Bill Murray and Her Excellency Laila Al Najjar.
