Induction Program for the New Students Academic Year 2012-2013

SHCT received semester 1 batch for the Academic Year 2012-2013 on Saturday, 8/9/2012. This years intake was 529 students in total (387 males; 142 females). The induction program for this year was carried out in a weeks time and included various activities that were set to help students know more about the college policies, departments and centers. The program started by receiving students at the Multiple Purpose Hall. In the presence of the Assistant Deans and Head of Departments, the event host, Abdullah Al Roshdi from the Business Studies Department welcomed the new batch of students after the recitation of the Holy Quran by Abdullah Al Kumashki. Following this, the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Mr. Ayman Al Kiyumi delivered a speech which focused on educational and academic integrity. He also shed light on the role of the college administration and staff members would play in helping the students and clarifying their rights and responsibilities. Mr. Ayman also stressed on the importance of the student guide and about the awareness of all rules and regulations to experience a more successful and less stressful academic life. Then, Mr. Darwish Al Kalbani, the Assistant Dean for Students Affairs, spoke to the students, welcoming and congratulating them on having joined ShCT. In his speech, he spoke about the educational system in the college and the importance of making use of all the facilities available in the college for learning. He also advised the students about the importance of not waiting for everything to happen, but making efforts to seek education. He ended his speech with.. Finally, I ask all of you to take care of this country since you are its offspring. In your hands only this country will grow. Take your study seriously for this educational institution is the place from where you depart to the job market. So, supply yourself with education, piousness, patience, love and loyalty to the country and the leader His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, may God protect him. Afterwards, it was time for Mr. Ali Al Harthi, the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, to deliver his speech before what he called his siblings. Mr. Ali touched upon the traffic tragedies and the horrifying record of deaths in car accidents in Oman. He advised the students to drive carefully. In his speech, he gave examples of brilliant students from ShCT and asked everyone to have plans for their future and the will to be active and successful individuals who will make everyone proud. He also explained to the students the process of opening a bank account as part of the induction week. Later, the Counseling and Graduates Follow-up Department represented by Mr. Ahmed Al Farsi went through the induction week program and highlighted the important dates, rooms, times and other details. English Language Center also had a chance to explain all the important details, issues and procedures that the fresh students had to be aware of. Mr. Ali Mahmood Al Bulushi from ELC first briefed the audience about the ELC mission and objectives that focus on the learners ability to use all English skills very well in a way that would enable one to be ready to face the job market needs. Later, he explained the placement test process and the requirements of all the four levels at the Foundation Program. Finally, Mr. Ali shed light on important issues such as absence and cheating in the placement test and the consequences of that. At the end of Day1 program, the students proceeded to the ELC notice boards to check out the rooms where they would sit for the placement test that started at 12.30 pm and lasted for 2 hours. At half past two, the first day of the Induction process came to an end Days 2 & 3 programs of the Induction Week (9-10/9/2012) Two meetings with the new batch of students were conducted on Day 2 & 3 of the Induction Week, and the agenda was as follows:
  • Organizational Structure of the ShCT.
  • Facilities and services available for the students.
  • Educational system at ShCT and the different specializations and courses.
  • College polices in regard with attendance and absence warnings.
  • Other policies the students have to abide by. (e.g. College Bylaws, Student Guide, Investigative and Disciplinary Committees)
  • Dos and Donts at ShCT and Academic and individual commitments. Female students were directed to open bank accounts in the College campus on Day 2 and the male students on Day 3. Days 4 program of the Induction Week (11/9/2012) On Tuesday, another chance was given for all students who did not manage to finish the procedures of opening new bank accounts on the previous days. On the same day, a fire drill was conducted by Al Dar Company for Safety and Security Services. Days 5 program of the Induction Week (12/9/2012) On Wednesday, the placement test results were ready and students were placed in different levels according to their scores. Semester 1 timetables for the Foundation Program were announced for the students who would start attending classes from Saturday 15/9/2012.
