IT Department Organizes Seminar on Diabetes

In celebration of the World Diabetes Day 2012, the Health and Safety Committee, headed by Mr. Mohammed Naheed, together with the QA Coordinator of the Information Technology Department, Mr. Christodoss Prasanna, organized a seminar-symposium on Diabetes last Monday, November 19, 2012 at the College Amphitheater. Mr. S. Chellapandi, a senior medical representative, Abbott Laboratories, IBN SINA Pharmacy, served as the resource speaker. He shared his knowledge on diabetes and diabetes care management, and his experience in consulting and supplying medicine for various diabetologists and diabetic patients in the Sultanate of Oman. According to the statistics presented, there are 221 million people worldwide who are suffering from diabetes. It was a 46% increase in 2010 from the figure recorded in 2000. As such, diabetes is considered as a silent pandemic, and a challenging problem for the public health care. As defined, diabetes is a chronic disease which a person has high blood either because the body does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond adequately to the insulin that is produced. According to the presentation, insulin is considered the gate keeper, just like a fuel needed to power up the car’s engine. He discussed the different types of diabetes, its risk factors and symptoms. Without proper care control, it can complicate the human vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, etc. Therefore, appropriate diabetes management should be carried out such as diet, exercise and weight management as part of lifestyle change. The resource speaker emphasized the importance of proper nutrition and healthy foods in combating this dreadful disease. He gave samples of Ensure, a complete, balance nutritional drink, and Glucerna SR, low-calorie meal replacement or snacks, to the participants. Mr. Aijaz Ahmed, IT Lecturer, welcomed the resource speaker and the participants by reminding the audience that health is wealth. After the presentation, Dr. Mary Jane Aragon, HoS-Networking, awarded the plaques of appreciation to Mr. S. Chellapandi and the Al-Raffah Medical Hospital. Al-Raffah Medical Hospital Sohar Branch, provided free blood sugar and blood pressure screening to the college staff and students at the 1st Floor Lobby of the Main Building. Also, Dr. Joey Masirag, IT Lecturer, served as the master of ceremonies.
