IT Department conducts a series of lectures

The IT department facilitated a series of lectures on Mathematics and Networking courses during the current semester (Semester 1, AY 2013-2014) in response to the mandate for strengthening the quality of its classroom instructions. For the networking section, two lecture-workshops were organized. The first one was Network Security and Auditing, which was handled by Mr. Muhammad Faheem Qureshi, IT Lecturer. The workshop focused on the following topics: how to secure network design and its implementation, network security technologies, and modern network security audit methodologies. The other seminar-workshop was on Window Server 2012, in cooperation with the Educational Technology Centre (ETC), with Mr. Johnson Gurrea and Mr. Melvin Belarmino, both ETC Technicians, as facilitators. The workshop was about deploying and managing network server using Windows Server 2012, active directory domain services and objects, securing windows server by using group policy objects, and Windows powershell. The Faculty of Mathematics, an integral part of the IT Department, arranged two other lectures. The lecture on Probability and Statistics for Engineers, delivered by Mr. Mahesh Garvandha, discussed descriptive measures, sampling, probability distributions, numerical analysis for linear, nonlinear, and laplace equations, exponential, poisson and weibull distributions, and a number of other topics. Ms. Malathi Gopinath facilitated the lecture on Discrete Structures. She discussed topics related to techniques of discrete structures, pigeonhole principle, relations, algorithms, graphs and trees, automata, algebraic structures, etc. Similar workshops and refresher courses were carried out in June and July this year as part of the staff professional development activities. The lecture of Mr. Thanigaivel Ganesan, networking lecturer, on cloud-based tool for effective teaching centered on using tools in course authoring, testing, social networks and micro-sharing, conferencing and virtual classroom, and webcasting, among others. Mr. Thani’s lecture about NS2 covered topics on OSI model, research on manets, security issues, virtualbox, NS installation, etc. Mr. Muhammad Fahem supervised the workshop on Linux Professional Institute Certification Level 1.This junior level certification requires trainees to work at the Linux command line, perform maintenance tasks, and install and configure workstations. Mr. Syed Myer, HoS of Networking Section, Ms. Faridah Rehan, HoS of Mathematics, and Mr. Gharib Al-Matroushi, HoD of IT Department conceptualized and oversaw these staff development activities.
