Business Studies Department holds Lecture-Seminar cum Mini Workshop

The SPDC of the Business Studies Department conducted another Lecture-Seminar cum Mini Workshop on \'Developing an Effective Assessment Tool\' last Thursday, 6th February, 2014 at the Multi Purpose Hall, Engineering Building from 08:00 AM to 09:30 AM. . Mr. Joefrelin C. Ines, PhD, MBA, IACMP served as the resource person. The topic shed light on the methods of achieving instructional objectives and attaining the desired level of learning outcomes. According to the lecturer “The basis of all exam questions should be the testing of learning outcomes,” and “using Bloom’s Taxonomy can help you clarify what you want students to learn.” He further explained that “by setting learning outcomes at different levels using Bloom’s Taxonomy, lecturers will target exactly what they want students to know, be able to do, or have experienced as a result of the learning activities in class.” A mini workshop was integrated with the lecture-seminar, in which the thirty participants from the three areas of specialization of the department namely; Accounting, Human Resource and Marketing were diversely grouped. The mini workshop was intended for honing the participants’ questioning technique in class and in preparing tests or exams using Bloom’s Taxonomy. The different hierarchies of learning or different types of questions based on Bloom’s Taxonomy were presented and guide verbs and questions stems were provided to the participants to construct questions. Lastly, the participants were tasked to develop rubrics: a tool for assessment of assignments, presentations, essays, theses or senior projects, exercises, activities, etc. The rubric sets criteria for marking the works of students based on various factors or dimensions and descriptors. The lecture-seminar cum mini workshop enlightened the participants on the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy in the course delivery and its link to test construction and provided guidelines for effective assessment using rubrics.
