ELC spearheads 3-day ELT Workshop
The Staff Professional Development Committee (SPDC) of the English Language Center conducted a three-day English Language Teaching Workshop at A 214 and A 215, Shinas College of Technology on April 11-13, 2016.
Attended by ShCT’s ELC staff, the intensive ELT Workshop featured five workshops and presentations about English Language Teaching.
For the first day, Dr. Joseph Dayag and Ms. Samar Ahmed Mouneimne delivered a workshop presentation titled “Integrating Language Learning Strategies into EFL Teaching.”
Ms. Samar discussed the six language learning strategies EFL students must apply to enhance their EFL learning; whereas, Dr. Dayag demonstrated two effective teaching strategies that foster the development of Omani students’ cognitive and metacognitive language learning strategies.
For the second day, Mr. Waleed S. Mandour presented “Empowering Students with Google Apps for Education” from 10:00 to 11:00 am. He introduced some Google apps primarily designed for educational purposes.
Dr. Kalyana Chakravarthi Thirunagari presented a workshop titled “EFL to ESP: A Paradigm Shift” from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm.
Dr. Kalyan differentiated General English from English for Specific Purposes as he facilitated a workshop that shed light on the issues surrounding the shift from EFL to ESP.
For the last day, Mr. Peter Copperwheat facilitated a workshop dubbed “Practical Ideas for Teaching the Present Perfect.”
Mr Copperwheat introduced and explored teaching strategies that develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and promote independent and collaborative learning.
Finally, Mr. Ossama Mostafa Sayed introduced his board game in his presentation titled: “The Dice Power: Designing and Using Educational Board Games.”
Mr. Ossama talked about designing board games as he requested the participants to design their own following a template.
ELC HOC Mr. Ali Abdullah Al Balushi and SPDC Chairperson Mr. Johnny Kwashie expressed gratitude to the workshop presenters who made the three-day In-House ELT Workshop possible.
The three-day Workshop was organized in lieu of the annual national ELT Workshop regularly conducted by the College.
