As part of staff professional development, the English language Centre hosted a webinar on 25^th November 2021, called ‘Give Me Space: Strategies Promoting Active Class Engagement’. The session was facilitated by Dr Leah Corpuz, Doctor of Philosophy in Language Education at the University of Cordilleras. Dr Leah is also an author and publisher of ‘Strategies in the Teaching and Writing of Research’ and ‘Give me SPACE: The Need for Strategies Promoting Active Class Engagement’  The aim of the webinar was to demonstrate a diverse range of ‘inclusive’ teaching strategies, which promote active learning in class and help teachers to provide individual attention to learners.  Dr Leah talked about the need to train students to work collaboratively and support one another, to help build confidence. The use of positive reinforcement was highlighted, in addition to  ‘rehearsal strategies’ or Modes of Response (MOR) which allow students time to process information.  The webinar, which was organized by the Staff Professional Development Team, was attended by UTAS-Shinas lecturers and external guests.
