IT Department holds a talk on Windows 8
On the fifth run of its TechTalk Series, the IT Department conducted a talk entitled Windows 8: An Overthrow in the Technology last Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Computer Laboratory 1. Mr. C. Prassana Ranjith, IT QA Coordinator, served as the resource speaker and re-echoed the topics discussed in the workshop he attended in Muscat along with Mr. Gharib Al-Matroushi, HoD-IT. He discussed the new features a user can find in Windows 8 in addition to those that have been incorporated from the older versions with or without improvements. Mr. Prassana stated that the Windows 8, startup is much faster than the previous versions because of the use of the new and improved Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), a trusted boot. With the use of Sync or Live ID, it allows a user to open personalized operating system from any PC, mobile, or tablet device which uses Windows 8. With Microsoft Skydrive, a user can access any favorite photos, files, and documents. Mr. Prassana also presented the new and innovative dynamic desktop, Windows Tile App, Windows Store, Windows to Go, picture password, improved search function, and other features. He emphasized that in Windows 8, users can expect longer battery life. He then gave a demonstration of some useful Apps in Windows 8 such as UML Design Generator Suite, Quadratic Equation Calculator, Drums for Windows, etc. He also said that most of these Apps can be downloaded for free.
After the presentation, Mr. Gharib Al-Matroushi, HoD-IT, handed over the certificate of appreciation, together with Dr. Mary Jane Aragon, HoS-IT. He also encouraged other IT Lecturers to take part in this TechTalk series by sharing their knowledge, skills, and expertise.
