ELC faculty attend workshop
The English Language Center (ELC) faculty attended a workshop on “Addressing Pronunciation Needs” held at Room F-023, ELC Building, on April 18, 2019.
ELC lecturers Mr. Hamdan Al Abri and Ms. Razwana Khawaja served as the resource speakers.
Organized by the Staff Professional Development Team (SPDT), the workshop aimed at addressing common pronunciation issues encountered by Arabic learners of the English language.
The workshop touched on several factors such as students’ learning strategies, curriculum, teachers’ attitude and techniques, L1 (first language) and L2 (second language) differences and lack of research and awareness.
The speakers indicated that the need for learners to learn the context of pronunciation was of utmost importance. However, they also lamented the relatively low level of research and interest on the issue.
They introduced a number of fun games and activities that could enhance pronunciation skills like lip reading, sound maze, beat out the stress, Salim’s cuppa tea and tongue twisters.
At the end of the workshop, the speakers were awarded with certificates of appreciation.
