IT Club organizes a lecture on FOSS
IT Club, a student organization of Information Technology Department, conducted a lecture on Free Software and Open Source (FOSS) last Monday, January 28, 2013 at the College Theater. Mr. Munther Al-Hamdani, Head of the FOSS group at Sultan Qaboos University, gave the keynote address. With his deep knowledge, skills, and interest in FOSS, talked at length about FOSS, its history, and the people behind this advocacy. He highlighted the importance and significance of FOSS in system and software development nowadays. He mentioned that open-source software applications are cost-effective compared to closed-source software. He shared with the audience the experience his group had at SQU in FOSS-based projects. He also disclosed that his group at SQU distributed copies of Ubuntu, a free OS, across the Sultanate.
Ms. Amira Al-Balushi, IT Club President, after welcoming the audience and the guest speaker gave a short talk about IT Club as a student organization. She mentioned that the IT Club is planning to arrange a series of training workshops for its members, which would equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills in this fast-changing technology. Mr. Gharib Al-Matroushi, HoD-IT, presented a certificate of appreciation to the resource person and thanked the audience. This lecture was made possible through the initiative of Mr. Julius Cristobal, Adviser- IT Club and Mr. Gharib Al-Matroushi, HoD of IT.
