Spark Light Contest Champions win Two Awards!
The English Language Centre at UTAS Shinas celebrated the outstanding achievement of Post Foundation students Utba Al Waaili, Abdul Hakim Al Badi and Rudaina Al Shehhi, who took part in the interuniversity competition called Spark light, organized by A’ Sharqiyah University on 21st March 2022. The competition was a public speaking contest conducted in English and was a unique opportunity for students across the Sultanate of Oman to take part in the event to express their ideas using creativity, innovation, persuasion and develop their confidence in public speaking. Teams from nine universities took part in the contest, including participation from Sultan Qaboos University, Mazoon University, German University of Technology, Sohar University, UTAS Nizwa and others. The UTAS Shinas team scooped 2 awards from both categories, which included 2nd place for ‘Best Script’ and 3rd place for ‘Best Performance’ for their impactful performance titled ‘Depression Among University Students’
ELC lecturers Ms Amira Al Balushi and Ms Razwana Khawaja supervised the students for the Spark Light Contest and accompanied them to A’ Sharqiyah University. English Language Centre HoS Mr Hamdan Al Abri, expressed his delight and commended the 3 team members, and the supervisors for the great achievement. Mr Hamdan said that he had full confidence in the team owing to the effort and dedication they put into the task, in spite of their busy daily schedule, and the results reflected their excellent work. He encouraged them to continue to take part in future competitions. Ms Saffiya Al Makhmari, co-ordinator of Student Support Services at the ELC, said that UTAS Shinas and everyone at the ELC was incredibly proud of the students who demonstrated a high level of talent and professionalism as well as fluency in English during their performance. The students were awarded certificates of recognition and trophies for winning.
