Job Seekers English Course in Shinas Bridges the Gap Between the Community and Industry

The English Language Centre at UTAS Shinas delivered its second course for the community, which focussed on ‘English for Job search’.  The free course was offered to community members, to help them develop their confidence in speaking English and to prepare them for job interviews.  The course provided a theory and practice-based approach, which enabled trainees to learn advanced interview techniques by reflecting on their personal achievements, strengths and weaknesses and be able to use formal language to express themselves. Trainees were given the opportunity to put theories into practice by demonstrating newly acquired skills in practice interview scenarios. The course included participation by the OQ Team Leader- Competency Management, Mr Suhail Al Mashaani, who conducted online mock interviews from Salalah.  Mr Suhail shared useful tips and provided detailed feedback after the interviews.  The trainees benefitted greatly from the experience and were able to apply skills practiced. Mock interviews were also conducted by Academias Britannia from Spain, in which candidates practiced applying for English teaching roles, with an ‘international interview’ experience. Furthermore, Mr Hazza Al Ghaithi, HR Manager from INCO Group of Companies, participated in conducting face to face interviews and explained the ‘dos and don’ts’ to succeed in an interview.  The two-week course ended with a comprehensive presentation from Mr Haitham Al Mamari, HR Affairs Manager - Central Bank of Oman (CBO), who provided extensive information pertaining to job search techniques and discussed the importance of creating and updating information using Linkedin and other professional networking platforms to search for job opportunities. The dean of UTAS Shinas, Dr Ahmed Al Shahri, presented certificates to the attendees and praised the community course initiative organised by the ELC, which has been very popular and has been supporting community members to develop their skills.  The trainees expressed their delight and acknowledged the unique opportunity to attend the course, which was benchmarked against British government standards, to provide English speaking skills for work and life.
